Tragic love bookends the final ActewAGL Llewellyn concert for 2018. Tchaikovsky’s tortured personal life and Shakespeare’s romantic tragedy collide to produce a perfectly constructed, magical fantasy piece. Samuel Barber’s glorious blend of melancholic and heart-tugging beauty, soaring lyricism and dazzling sheen provides the perfect showcase for Grace Clifford, the 2014 ABC Young Performer of the Year. The evening concludes with a centenary celebration of legendary American composer, Leonard Bernstein, with his Symphonic Dances from West Side Story. This epic work transplants Shakespeare’s tragic feud to an eclectic postwar urban soundscape, with vibrant instrumental combinations and a huge percussion section bringing to life the urgent, menacing rhythms and pulses of West Side Story.
