MAHLER Symphony No. 5 in C sharp minor

Few openings are as instantly recognisable as the gripping first bars of Grieg’s Piano Concerto or the chilling trumpet solo that heralds the beginning of Mahler’s Fifth Symphony.

Infused with Norwegian folk music, Grieg’s only piano concerto is one of the most popular ever written. Russian pianist Konstantin Shamray — the first pianist in the history of the Sydney International Piano Competition to take home both the grand prize and the People’s Choice (as well as six other prizes) — returns to the CSO to deliver a powerhouse performance with Nicholas Milton.

Following the Grieg, the CSO unleashes the wave of emotion that is Mahler’s Fifth Symphony, at the centre of which is the exquisite Adagietto for strings and harp, a declaration of love to his wife Alma. “You forget that time has passed,” Herbert von Karajan said of this symphony. “A great performance of the Fifth is a transforming experience.”
