Australian music inspired by whales, their song and their home.
Our second Australian Series concert features the world premiere of a new CSO commission by Nicole Smede, a Warrimay and cross-cultural multidisciplinary artist based on Wadi Wadi Dharawal Country. Her piece, for ensemble and choir, is inspired by the story of Old Tom, an orca who helped three generations of whalers in Twofold Bay in Eden, New South Wales, and the importance of orcas to the Twofold Bay First Nations community.
We pair it with 'Spel III' for vibraphone, from Kate Moore’s Coral Speak suite, which she wrote in homage to the fragility of the Great Barrier Reef, and the corals threatened by climate change and human intervention; Torres Strait Islander composer Will Kepa’s Ailan Opping (island hopping) for flute, clarinet, vibraphone and cello; and Jessica Cottis’ Phocoena phocoena, a new work for antiphonal violins, inspired by Swedish research into whale communication. The concert comes to a close with another CSO commission, a new work by soprano and composer Jane Sheldon.
