CSO Youth Percussion

A performance enrichment program for enthusiastic percussionists aged 12-19. CSO Youth Percussion is an exciting opportunity for young players to rehearse and perform alongside CSO Principal percussionist Veronica Bailey and work with guest CSO tutors.
All participants receive specialized training and mentorship in solo and ensemble playing. CSO Youth percussion welcomes musicians looking to gain confidence and ensemble experience.
Audition information
Applicants must prepare the following:
- Two pieces of their own choice.
- Scales: B-flat major, B-flat harmonic minor and B-flat melodic minor, two octaves.
- Rudiments: Single stroke roll/ Double stroke roll / Paradiddles / Buzz roll: 20 seconds duration, starting at pp, crescendo to ff, then diminuendo back to pp.
- Musicians must perform pieces that demonstrate their ability on two of the following instruments:
- marimba
- xylophone
- vibraphone
- snare drum
- timpani
- Candidates will be required to sight-read on both a keyboard percussion instrument and snare drum.
Instruments provided:
- Adams five-octave marimba
- Yamaha vibraphone
- Musser 3.5-octave xylophone
- Grover four-inch symphonic snare drum
- Adams timpani (please request in advance
Eligibility
- Ages 12-19 in 2027.
- Minimum instrument level AMEB grade 5 or equivalent.
Fees
- The participation fee for 2027 is $700 plus GST.
- A limited number of scholarship places will be offered to students facing financial barriers to participation.
Applications close at 5pm on Friday 6 November. Auditions will be scheduled in late November.
