When the Swedish pop musicians arrived in Australia, they were unprepared for the level of fandom they would encounter. ABBA’s song Fernando soared to the top of the Australian music charts for 14 weeks (on par with the Beatles’ Hey Jude, a record that remained unchallenged until Ed Sheeran’s Shape of You in 2017) and thousands of people waited for hours at Sydney Airport to see them land.
