Unaccompanied choral music from the Renaissance to today.
The CSO Chorus takes centre stage with an a cappella program directed by Tobias Cole that opens with Byrd’s Sing Joyfully and closes with Bach’s unaccompanied motet, Singet dem Herrn ein neues Lied (Sing unto the Lord a new song), BWV 225.
Between those two jubilant works, our eclectic program includes Luca Marenzio’s Renaissance madrigal Crudel, perchè mi fuggi (Cruel one, why do you flee from me), Purcell’s ‘When I am laid in earth’ (Dido’s Lament) and ‘With drooping wings’, in Cole’s own arrangements, and Bruckner’s motet Christus factus est (Christ became obedient).
Renaissance composer Raffaella Aleotti was so renowned in Ferrara, where she was prioress of the Convent of San Vito, that she was mentioned by name in a 1621 guide to the city’s churches. We’ve chosen to showcase her Ego flos campi and Congratulamini mihi omnes in this program, before Anne Boyd’s As I crossed a bridge of dreams takes us to Australia in the 20th century and Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo’s serene Northern Lights brings us the sound of this century.
