Historically informed performances of music by Vivaldi and his contemporaries.
Our newly established CSO Baroque Ensemble transports you to Vivaldi’s Venice in our fourth Chamber Series concert. Vivaldi spent most of his life in the city: he toured it with his father as a young violinist, and it was where he was ordained, his red hair earning him the nickname ‘The Red Priest’. He taught music at Venice’s Ospedale della Pietà (an institution that took in and educated abandoned or orphaned children), composing for the Ospedale’s ensembles and Venetian publisher Giuseppe Sala published Vivaldi’s Opus 1, a set of 12 Trio Sonatas.
This program features the first of that set and the 12th, based on the distinctive ‘folia’ dance theme. We pair Vivaldi’s ‘folia’ with another ‘folia’ by Giovanni Battista Reali (the 12th work in his own Opus 1), and a Trio Sonata by Giovanni Legrenzi – both fellow Venetians (though Legrenzi moved there later in life). Like Vivaldi, Isabella Leonarda was a music teacher, teaching and composing at the Ursuline Convent in Novara where she would eventually be named mother superior. She wrote mostly sacred vocal music, but in this concert we hear her Sonata Duodecima, the 12th and final entry in her Opus 16 set of instrumental works.
