Thank you.
We’re thrilled to announce that our Artist in Focus for the 2025 season, internationally renowned flautist Dr Sally Walker, has secured significant artsACT funding to produce a world-first recording of Australian flute concertos performed by an Australian flautist.
Coinciding with the CSO’s 75th anniversary celebrations, this groundbreaking album will feature four remarkable Australian works, including three written specifically for Sally:
The fourth piece, Concerto Romantico, is Sally’s arrangement of early Australian composer Peggy Glanville-Hicks’ work originally composed for viola. This recording pays homage to Glanville-Hicks’ lost flute concerto, whose mystery endures.
Sally, a Canberra native who returned home after years living in Germany, touring with the Berlin Philharmonic and Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra and serving as Principal Flute with the Deutsche Kammerakademie Neuss in addition to work as a soloist and chamber musician, described the project as a deeply personal offering.
“The CSO was the first orchestra I heard live. For its 75th birthday, I wanted to contribute something truly special. Thanks to artsACT’s support, we will bring these magnificent Australian works to the world,” she said.
The album will be conducted by CSO Artistic Director and Chief Conductor Jessica Cottis and recorded in Llewellyn Hall over two sessions in March and November 2025. It not only highlights Australian musical excellence but celebrates Canberra as a vibrant cultural hub.
The CSO is proud to support this unique project, which will showcase Australian artistry on a global stage.
As our Artist in Focus for CSO’s 75th anniversary season, Sally is performing in multiple concerts. Book your tickets here.
