Aboriginal Composer
James Henry is a sought-after composer and sound designer known for his unique fusion of traditional Aboriginal and contemporary musical genres.
James has composed for the Sydney and Melbourne Symphony Orchestras, the Sydney Philharmonia Choir, the Melbourne String Ensemble and the Derwent Valley Concert Band. He has also held the role of Musical Director for Dreamtime at the ‘G and Melbourne Festival opening ceremonies, and lent his musical expertise to theatre and dance productions.
James has immersed himself in the cultural fabric of various communities, playing an integral role in the revitalisation of Indigenous languages through song. His recent Fellowship deepened his understanding of traditional Aboriginal music, enabling him to seamlessly integrate it into contemporary genres. As a singer/songwriter, James also draws inspiration from 60s pop/rock/folk luminaries such as the Beatles, and Simon and Garfunkel.
In 2023, James won a Green Room Award (Outstanding Sound Design/Composition) together with Gary Watling and Lydia Fairhall for Heart is a Wasteland, presented by ILBIJERRI Theatre Company and Arts Centre Melbourne.
