SEASON HIGHLIGHTS
GROUNDBREAKING HARMONY
The Llewellyn Series opens with music from Wagner’s blazingly original Tristan und Isolde. Conducted by Jessica Cottis, the program features Mendelssohn’s Reformation Symphony, a suite from Hitchcock’s psycho-thrilled Vertigo and Margaret Sutherland’s infrequently performed Violin Concerto, with outstanding young soloist Courtenay Cleary.
COMPELLING AUSTRALIAN VOICES
The CSO Chamber Ensemble premieres four Australian commissions across the Australian Series, including works by visionary, young Australian composers Jakub Jankowski and Rhyan Clapham a.k.a. DOBBY. On the mainstage, the CSO presents a bold, nature-inspired commission by Canberra export Leah Curtis.
MORE CHERISHED CHAMBER FAVOURITES
The CSO presents an expanded Chamber Classics Series in 2022, including a program of innovative and compelling works by Beethoven and Debussy, featuring one of Australia’s greatest flautists, Emma Sholl. CSO Artist in Focus for 2022, Sholl also joins the orchestra for CPE Bach’s virtuosic flute concerto, conducted by early music specialist Benjamin Bayl.
UNBOUNDED IMAGINATION
Jessica Cottis conducts music by one of the greatest creative trailblazers, Stravinsky: his hypnotic Petrushka alongside a bold, nature-inspired, new work from Canberra-raised, LA-based composer Leah Curtis. In the same program, Markiyan Melnychenko makes his CSO debut with Sibelius’ evocative Violin Concerto.
SPELLBINDING ARTISTRY
Pianist Kristian Chong returns to Llewellyn Hall for Malcolm Williamson’s striking Second Piano Concerto, conducted by Principal Guest Conductor Simon Hewett. The program also features Strauss’ late masterpiece Metamorphosen and Beethoven’s revolutionary Eroica Symphony.
MUSIC TO LIFT THE SPIRITS
Simon Hewett takes the podium for two special performances of Handel’s Messiah, featuring Chloe Lankshear, Tobias Cole, Andrew Goodwin and Adrian Tamburini. The most performed piece of classical music worldwide, this is music for everyone to enjoy, to lift the spirits.
