Jessica Hall
trombone
When Jessica Hall started playing trombone as a seven year old, she was told her arms were too short and she should play euphonium instead. But the trombone “looked cool” and she was determined not to give up. Growing up in the regional city of Dubbo in Central West NSW, she studied as a scholarship holder at the Macquarie Conservatorium, where her teacher was Neill Ryan. She also participated in masterclasses with Scott Kinmont, Greg van der Struik and Jessica Buzbee.
Performance highlights have included concerts at the Sydney Opera House with the NSW Arts Unit state wind bands, playing in the orchestra for annual Schools Spectaculars, and with the Regional Youth Orchestra. In 2019, she toured Europe as a member of the West of the Divide Wind Ensemble and Choir, with concerts in Croatia, Slovenia and Italy, including St Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican and St Mark’s,Venice.
Now based in Canberra, she is studying for a double degree in Music and Environmental Science & Sustainability at the Australian National University, where she is a member of the ANU Orchestra and also performs with the Royal Military College chamber ensemble.
Through the Kingsland Fellowship program, Jessica hopes to become more involved with Canberra’smusical community and to strengthen and make new connections. In addition to refining her performing skills as a classical trombonist, she is also interested in expanding her experiences as a jazz musician.
Jessica Hall plays on a Bach 42 tenor trombone and a Bach 5G mouthpiece.
